A fire burning in a hard-to-reach area south of Limassol’s Kouris dam was deliberately started, fire officials said on Tuesday, as crews continue to battle the blaze in one remaining location.

Fire Chief Nikos Longinos told Philenews that the fire was “clearly deliberate”, explaining that it originated from the roadside near the Kouris dam.

Police are investigating reports from witnesses who spotted a vehicle near the ignition point, with developments expected by morning.

While the fire has been contained in most areas, firefighters are still struggling to control one section due to difficult terrain. The blaze has spread through dry grass, wild vegetation and trees in the rough terrain and along a riverbed.

Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis has joined the Limassol District Officer and Fire Chief at the scene to coordinate response efforts.

Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis announced on X that following an increase in rural fires in recent days, the Fire Chief, in coordination with the Police Chief, has ordered increased patrols by both security forces. The Fire Service’s drone unit has also intensified surveillance of high-risk areas.

The Fire Service has urged the public to immediately report any fires or suspicious activities to authorities.
