Direct Democracy protest over electricity prices heads to Presidential Palace

Relevant News

Protesters from Direct Democracy Cyprus are marching from Eleftheria Square towards the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Saturday in a demonstration over the price of electricity.

The protest is backed by AKEL, the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation and the Party for the Animals. Police are in the area to ensure security and manage traffic.

Under the Public Assemblies and Parades Law 151(I) of 2025, organisers must ensure that a gathering takes place peacefully and in an orderly way, cooperate with the local authority, the police and the police liaison officer, and follow their instructions. Police may impose restrictions and disperse a gathering, mainly if it stops being peaceful, breaches the restrictions imposed, poses a risk of injury or of damage to property, or, in the case of a spontaneous or impromptu gathering, fails to comply with restrictions. Where there is reasonable suspicion that a gathering may stop being peaceful, or that offences are being or may be committed by someone hiding their identity, police can order that person to remove whatever is making them unrecognisable.
