Police urged drivers to exercise caution on Friday as the meteorological department issued a yellow weather warning for severe thunderstorms and hail across the island.

The warning, in effect from noon until 6 p.m., predicted isolated severe thunderstorms primarily affecting mountainous regions, inland areas, and northern and eastern parts of Cyprus, police said in a statement.

“Hail is expected during thunderstorms. Rainfall intensity is expected to range between 35 and 55 millimetres per hour,” the Department of Meteorology said in its warning.

A weak low-pressure system is currently affecting the region, with temperatures reaching approximately 22 degrees Celsius inland, 20 degrees in coastal areas, and 8 degrees in higher mountain regions.

Weather conditions are expected to become mostly clear across most areas tonight, with locally increased cloud coverage. Fog may form in the early morning hours, particularly in inland and eastern areas.

Saturday will begin mostly clear with some local cloud coverage, but clouds developing during and after midday are expected to bring isolated rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms, primarily in mountainous areas, inland regions, and eastern parts of the island.
