House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou has welcomed the victory of Tufan Erhürman in the leadership elections in the occupied north, describing it as a rejection of the two-state solution by Turkish Cypriot voters.

“With their vote, Turkish Cypriots have turned their backs on the two-state solution. Congratulations to Tufan Erhürman on his victory,” Demetriou wrote on social media.

She expressed hope that Erhürman’s emergence as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community would “open the way to substantial negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework.”

This follows earlier comments from AKEL leader Stefanos Stefanou, who described the result as “a positive and hopeful message” showing that “the Turkish Cypriot community has decided in favour of a federation solution and reunification.”

With over 75% of ballot boxes counted, Erhürman had secured 63.58% of votes compared to incumbent Ersin Tatar’s 35.27%, according to the electoral commission in the occupied north.
