A firefighter was injured in an assault by one of the owners while responding to a major blaze at a carpentry workshop in Sia that broke out shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday, police said.

Three fire engines from Nicosia fire stations responded to the incident, where witness statements indicate the owner attacked the firefighter after being asked to move away from the flames. The injured firefighter was taken to hospital with knee, shoulder, and elbow injuries.

Andreas Kettis, fire service spokesman, said the blaze caused extensive damage to the building, equipment, and contents. Crews successfully removed four compressed gas cylinders from the premises and prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby house.

Firefighters deployed water lines, foam generation equipment, and breathing apparatus to combat the blaze. Two fire engines remain at the scene.

Police are gathering statements about the assault while awaiting the fire’s complete extinguishment to investigate its cause.
