Holy guacamole: avocado growing tops €3m a year in Paphos

Relevant News

Avocado production in Cyprus is now worth more than 3 million euros a year, with more than 4,000 decares under cultivation, making the Paphos district, and the Chrysochous area in particular, a key trading centre for the crop.

New orchards have been planted in recent years, investment is being made and production is growing steadily, opening up a new and expanding market for the fruit.

The Polis Chrysochous cooperative SEDIGEP, a recognised producer organisation, has played a part in the improvement in production and international trade.

Supporting agricultural production, especially promising new crops such as avocado, is a key government priority, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis said at the recent avocado festival in Argaka.

He referred to the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan 2023-2027, which has funding of 454 million euros. Under the plan, 67.5 million euros will go to investments and to help young farmers set up for the first time. Senekis said the strong interest shown confirms there is a willingness to invest in and develop the farm sector.
