Cypriot teen soldier flown to France after suspected heatstroke

A 17-year-old Cypriot National Guardsman has been flown to France for specialist treatment at a transplant centre, accompanied by his mother, following a severe case of suspected heatstroke.

The teenager, who had enlisted as a commando just days prior, collapsed after a morning exercise on Friday. He was initially taken to Larnaca General Hospital before being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at Nicosia General Hospital, where he remained intubated.

Health officials deemed the transfer abroad necessary after the young man began experiencing serious liver problems early Monday morning, along with complications affecting other vital organs.

The Ministry of Health initiated transfer procedures around 11:00 local time on Monday as his condition deteriorated. A medical aircraft arrived in Cyprus at approximately 22:20 the same day.

Despite medical staff preparing to transport the patient to Larnaca Airport, the flight was postponed until Tuesday as the aircraft had reached its maximum allowable flight hours for the day.
