Criminal investigators appointed to probe murderer’s escape

The Attorney General of Cyprus has appointed two independent criminal investigators to examine the prison escape of convicted murderer Theodoros Theofanous last September, marking a significant development in the case.

Attorney General George L. Savvides announced today that lawyers Stefanos Skordis and Christos Karas will conduct a criminal investigation into potential offences by police officers, prison guards or other individuals related to the September 26, 2024 escape.

The probe will examine both the circumstances of Theofanous’s escape and the conditions under which he was granted leave permits, both on the day of his escape and on previous occasions.

The decision follows the review of disciplinary investigation reports from both the Central Prisons and the Police, submitted to the Legal Service in early January.

The investigators have been given two months to complete their inquiry.
