Attorney General Yiorgos Savvides has appointed an independent criminal investigator who will take charge in the case of the Pakistani man who died after being shot with a service weapon bullet during an incident in Potamia on Epiphany Day earlier this week.
Savvides noted in a written statement that ‘in accordance with relative legislation and having being briefed by the police chief over the on-going investigation, I have decided to appoint Public Prosecutor Ninos Kekkos as an independent Criminal Investigator, who will lead the case’.
Meanwhile, a relevant police report has been received by health minister Michalis Damianos, who said that he will be looking into the case closely and soon making decisions on how to proceed.
Authorities are investigating homicide, having initially ruled out foul play but then discovering a bullet inside the victim in the subsequent autopsy, establishing that his death was caused by internal bleeding. A coroner had been called to the scene for a post mortem.
Damianos had requested the police report after the case was reclassified as homicide.
The body of the man wad discovered half-naked at the Nicosia suburb of Acropolis, almost thirty kilometres from the scene.
Opposition AKEL demanded that Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis and Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis take responsibility over the latest incident, a further indication, it noted, of the deep rooted corruption plaguing the force.
