Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Russia had tested a new conventional intermediate-range missile, codenamed Oreshnik, in an attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.

Putin said the strike was in response to Ukraine’s use of American and British long-range weapons on November 21, targeting what he described as one of Ukraine’s largest military-industrial complexes dating from the Soviet era.

“A test was carried out of one of the latest Russian intermediate-range missile systems, in this case with a non-nuclear hypersonic version of a ballistic missile”, Putin said, claiming the test was successful and hit its intended target.

He said the facility in Dnipro, which he referred to by its Soviet-era name Dnipropetrovsk, continues to manufacture missiles and other armaments.

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden greenlighted the use of American-made supersonic ballistic Atacms missiles by Ukraine against targets inside Russia.

Britain also gave permission to Ukraine to use Storm Shadow missiles to strike Russia.
