Israel says it killed Hezbollah leader Nasrallah

Israel on Saturday said an airstrike in Lebanon’s capital Beirut killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Its air force struck Hezbollah’s central headquarters on Friday, which the IDF said was located underground under a residential building in a southern suburb of Beirut.

The IDF added it also killed Ali Karaki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front.

“Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorise the world,” IDF said in a post on X.

The statement follows a series of overnight strikes in Beirut which Israel said were targeting Nasrallah and other Hezbollah commanders.

Who is Nasrallah

Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon’s militant Shia Islamist group Hezbollah, is one of the most well-known and influential figures in the Middle East.

He has remained out of public view for years due to concerns about potential assassination by Israel.

Nasrallah, who maintains close ties with Iran, has played a critical role in transforming Hezbollah into a powerful political and military force, and he is still revered by the group’s supporters.

Under his leadership, Hezbollah has trained fighters from the Palestinian militant group Hamas, as well as militias in Iraq and Yemen, while also acquiring missiles and rockets from Iran to use against Israel.

In June, Nasrallah threatened Cyprus that it could become “part of the war” should it continue to allow Israel to use its airports and bases for military purposes.
