The Department of Public Works has expedited procedures to complete the first section of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous motorway after terminating the previous contractor’s employment in November.

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades discussed the project’s progress during a meeting with Polis Chrysochous Mayor Yiotis Papachristofi. The entire motorway project will cost €330 million excluding VAT.

The 31-kilometre project will be constructed in two main phases to improve transport links and road safety in the region.

The first 15.5-kilometre section, from Agia Marinouda to Stroumpi, has entered a new tender process. The €96 million contract includes two traffic lanes, with plans to upgrade to four lanes by 2032 at an additional cost of €75 million.

The second 15-kilometre section, from Stroumpi to Polis Chrysochous, will be tendered in the first quarter of 2026. Set for completion in 2031, this €129 million segment will feature four traffic lanes, three interchanges, and two viaducts.

A €30 million connection from Mesogi to Marathounta will be added by 2030 to improve access for surrounding communities.

Vafeades said the strategic project would enhance tourist and economic development despite delays. “This motorway will not only improve regional connectivity but also enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors”, he said.
