Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades has promised to complete the long-delayed Paphos-Polis Chrysochous highway within three years, following yesterday’s termination of the construction contract with INTRAKAT.
During a meeting at Polis Chrysochous town hall on Tuesday, Vafeades outlined the government’s next steps, which include:
- Evaluating completed work
- Preparing new tender documents
- Launching a new bidding process
- Awarding the contract to a new contractor
“While this is an unfortunate development, we had to take this action”, Vafeades said, acknowledging that costs will increase but noting the government can seek compensation from the previous contractor for delays.
In a change to the original plans, the minister announced that the second phase of construction will now begin from Polis Chrysochous towards Stroumbi, rather than the reverse. However, he clarified that the two phases would not proceed simultaneously, as the first phase is “more mature”.
Polis Chrysochous Mayor Yiotis Papachristofi expressed residents’ anger and disappointment over the delays, announcing that local authorities will monitor progress every two to three months. He expects both phases to be completed within three and a half to four years.
The project, a longstanding demand from Paphos, will also reassess connecting routes to various areas along the new road, taking advantage of the current situation to review these plans with the Department of Public Works.
