The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has been placed on alert after discovering that solar panel owners have found ways to circumvent mandatory power reduction controls.
The practice, confirmed by two independent sources, involves tampering with remote control receivers that manage photovoltaic system output during grid safety operations.
While authorities describe the issue as currently manageable, they expressed concern about potential widespread disruption if the practice becomes more common.
The manipulation prevents necessary power reductions when conventional power units are operating, potentially destabilising the grid and risking blackouts.
Officials have implemented countermeasures to prevent system interference, though specific details were withheld for security reasons.
Authorities warn that tampering with safety controls could compromise the island’s electricity supply and hamper efforts to expand renewable energy adoption.
