Cyprus residents made 3,815,322 trips for personal and business reasons in 2025, up from 3,366,862 in 2024, according to Eurostat data published on Friday.

Across the European Union, residents made a total of 1.20 billion trips, up 1.4 per cent on 2024, or 17 million more trips.

Most trips stayed within the EU. Domestic trips, within residents’ own country, totalled 848 million, or 70 per cent of the total, and another 264 million, or 22 per cent, were to another member state. That means 92 per cent of all trips had an EU destination. The remaining 8 per cent were to destinations outside the EU, and fewer than half of these were outside Europe.

Romania had the highest share of domestic trips, at 89 per cent, followed by Spain at 87 per cent and Greece, France and Portugal at 85 per cent each. Luxembourg had the lowest share, at 5 per cent, followed by Belgium at 29 per cent and Malta at 32 per cent.

Spending

Although most trips were domestic, EU residents spent more on travel abroad: 379.4 billion euros, against 266.2 billion euros on domestic trips.

On domestic trips, accommodation took up 90.3 billion euros, or 34 per cent of spending, and transport 56 billion euros, or 21 per cent. On trips abroad, accommodation accounted for 131.3 billion euros, or 35 per cent, and transport for 121.5 billion euros, or 32 per cent.
