Turkey issues NAVTEX for surveys between its coast and occupied Cyprus

Turkey has issued a new NAVTEX for scientific research and underwater surveys in waters between its coast and occupied Cyprus, bringing plans for a natural gas pipeline to the north of the island back into focus.

The surveys will cover 12 designated coordinates in the Mediterranean between 26 October and 31 December 2026.

According to the website of Turkish state broadcaster TRT, the work will be carried out by the vessels R/V Denar Pathfinder, Denar Echo, Denar Explorer and Kırıcı.

The NAVTEX advises vessels passing through the area to maintain a safe distance from the ships carrying out the work.

TRT Haber reported that the proposed natural gas pipeline between Turkey and the occupied areas is intended to transport gas from Turkey to the island in the future and strengthen energy supply security in the north.

The Turkish broadcaster said that following the construction of the underwater water pipeline from Turkey to the occupied areas, the proposed gas project is regarded as an important step towards improving energy infrastructure between what it described as “the two countries”.

The NAVTEX is due to remain in effect until 31 December 2026.
