DISY figures sound out Fourlas as possible presidential candidate

Relevant News

Party figures in DISY have sounded out MEP Loucas Fourlas about seeking the party’s nomination for the 2028 presidential election, Phileleftheros understands, as factions unhappy with Thursday’s developments look for a third option.

Fourlas’s name has been mentioned increasingly in DISY circles as a possible choice. He returned to Cyprus from Strasbourg on Thursday evening, and party figures have approached him about putting his name forward in the internal selection process. For now, he is keeping his cards close to his chest.

The idea of a third candidate, alongside Averof Neofytou and Pamborides, is being discussed by various DISY circles that disagree with Thursday’s development.

There is turmoil in the DISY camp. Annita Demetriou’s decision to withdraw her interest has caused heated discussion and disagreement. Some party officials expressed their disagreement with her choice, in strong terms and to her directly, Phileleftheros understands. They stress that any such decision should have been taken collectively.

Former justice minister Ionas Nicolaou has also collected nomination papers, but it is not certain what he will ultimately do.

A further question is whether a third candidacy would upset the balance within the party, and whether it would help or hurt the existing contenders.

With soundings going on at various levels and in various directions, both behind the scenes and in public, no decisions or announcements are expected immediately. Party officials are expected to hold contacts and meetings on Friday and over the weekend, when any moves could take shape.
