Former health minister George Pamboridis announced on Monday that he will seek DISY’s nomination for the 2028 presidential election, adding a third major name to an increasingly contested race inside the party.
DISY leader Annita Demetriou has already said she intends to seek the party’s nomination, while former party leader Averof Neofytou announced last week that he will run in the presidential election. Neofytou has not yet made clear whether he will compete through DISY’s internal process or run as an independent.
The party’s Political Bureau has set 26 October as the deadline for nominations and 28 November for the internal vote that will determine DISY’s candidate for the 2028 election.
In his announcement, Pamboridis referred to what he described as introspection and division within DISY and said it was time for the party to turn the page.
He said he believed his candidacy could unite the party’s grassroots while also appealing to voters from other political backgrounds who share his vision for a modern European Cyprus.
“I have the knowledge, I have the experience and the willingness to serve with dignity and contribute to the country,” Pamboridis said.
His announcement came hours after he said he would make a final decision following a meeting with veteran figures from the party.
Pamboridis announced his decision publicly on X, writing: “My friends, I have decided to seek the nomination of the Democratic Rally for the 2028 Presidential Election.”
He ended the post with the phrase: “All the faithful, come forward!”
