Cyprus says it raised precautionary measures, after FT report over possible Iranian attacks

Cyprus has been taking increased precautionary measures for months, a competent source told CNA, when asked to comment on a Financial Times report that named Cyprus among the possible targets of Iranian retaliation in the event of a new US attack.

“We have had increased measures, precautionary ones, for months now,” the source told CNA, adding: “We are monitoring developments closely.”

The source noted that four Greek F-16 fighter jets, as well as the Greek frigate “Nikiforos Fokas,” are currently in Cyprus.

The Financial Times report said Iran had considered the possibility of striking US military targets in Europe if US President Donald Trump were to escalate the war.

The newspaper cited two sources said to be familiar with Iran’s internal deliberations, who said Iranian forces had considered the possibility of striking US facilities in southeastern European countries, including Bulgaria, which last month approved the use of the Bezmer airbase by US refuelling aircraft.

One of the sources said Cyprus, where a British airbase was hit by a drone in March, is also among the possible targets of retaliation in the event of a new US attack.
