The Department of Forests and the Fire Service are on alert after a fire broke out at the Kalo Chorio firing range following National Guard training live-fire exercises.
Fire Service crews have rushed to the scene and are working to put out the fire, according to a briefing from Police.
Larnaca Police officers are also at the scene.
According to information from the Fire Service, there are at least two active fire fronts in the area burning low vegetation. Firefighting forces have been reinforced with four aircraft, which have begun operating, while the Department of Forests is also assisting with six vehicles.
Firefighting crews are struggling to enter the firing range and reach the source of the fire, as the possible presence of unexploded ordnance and the particular conditions in the area make the operation extremely dangerous.
According to Fire Service Spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the fire is spreading beyond the firing range.
National Guard sources confirmed to philenews that a National Guard unit was carrying out training activities at the Kalo Chorio range. According to what we were told, the fire broke out during the exercise, though its cause remains unknown.
