The British base at Akrotiri remains on high alert as the United Kingdom accelerates the reinforcement of its forces in the region following the recent drone strike.

The arrival on Tuesday night of a large military transport aircraft, a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, marked what officials describe as a new phase in strengthening the deterrent capabilities of British forces in the eastern Mediterranean.

The aircraft, operating with the callsign RRR6140 (ASCOT), completed its flight from RAF Brize Norton and landed at the Akrotiri airbase at around 11 p.m.

The transport aircraft is believed to have carried military equipment referred to in statements by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, potentially including specialised helicopters and advanced electronic warfare systems.

The approach and landing of the aircraft took place amid heightened security measures. While the transport aircraft was taxiing at the base, a separate aerial surveillance operation was underway over the eastern Mediterranean.

An MQ-9B Protector RG Mk1 unmanned aircraft, described as one of the Royal Air Force’s newest surveillance platforms, was flying at high altitude in the area.

The drone carried out monitoring operations aimed at detecting potential threats, including drones similar to the Shahed type, ensuring that the arrival of reinforcements could be completed safely.

The MQ-9B Protector can remain airborne for more than 40 hours, providing continuous intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance coverage across a wide area stretching from the Lebanese coast towards Syria.

The Protector drones are also certified to operate safely in shared airspace with civilian aircraft operating from Larnaca International Airport and Paphos International Airport, reducing the risk of incidents during heightened military activity in the region.
