Paphos bus services face disruption after 11 vehicles grounded following fires

Relevant News

Paphos Transport Organisation (OSYPA) has implemented an immediate reduction in bus services starting Monday, 10 November 2025, after the Ministry of Transport ordered 11 buses of a specific model to be grounded for safety inspection.

The decision follows a bus fire on Wednesday morning near the Tombs of the Kings area. This incident marks the sixth fire involving the same bus model in the last three years.

OSYPA Director Andreas Rodosthenous confirmed the immobilisation of the vehicles has necessitated an emergency timetable change. The revised schedule will remain in effect until an international expert, who is due to arrive this weekend, completes inspections and certifies the buses’ suitability.

The ministry’s decision affects 11 high-capacity buses that serve approximately 1,000 residents daily. While initial assessments point to an electrical fault as the likely cause of the latest blaze, the recurring problem has led authorities to investigate two potential issues: either a fundamental design flaw (manufacturer accountability) or inadequate maintenance (contractor accountability).

The public should note that the current schedule remains valid for Saturday and Sunday, 8 and 9 November, with the revised schedule taking effect on Monday.
