The transport minister has called an emergency meeting today after another Paphos Transport Organisation bus caught fire shortly after midnight on Wednesday in the Tombs of the Kings area.

The bus, which wasn’t carrying passengers, had just finished its shift and was parked when fire broke out in the engine compartment. The fire service received the call at 00:49 and two fire engines from Paphos fire station rushed to the scene, bringing the blaze under control by 01:08. The rear of the vehicle suffered extensive damage.

Initial assessments by the Electromechanical Services Department suggest the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

This marks another incident involving a specific type of bus, raising alarm at the transport ministry. The minister, concerned about the frequency of these problems, has convened today’s urgent meeting with all relevant state agencies to examine the issue and take immediate action.

The meeting, chaired by the minister, will include the ministry’s director general and representatives from the Road Transport Department, the Electromechanical Services Department and the Public Passenger Transport Sector. They aim to thoroughly investigate the incidents and find solutions to prevent similar events in future.
