The final decision of the “military court” is expected to be announced today at 11:00 local time regarding the case of five Greek Cypriots facing “charges” of “illegal entry into a first-degree military zone” in the Turkish-occupied area of Cyprus.
The five individuals, who are all elderly and reportedly visiting their ancestral properties, were arrested in July near the occupied town of Trikomo. The case has drawn international condemnation, with the European Parliament calling the detentions a “flagrant violation of human rights” and an act of intimidation against Greek Cypriots visiting the territory.
The date for the ruling was set following the conclusion of the “hearing process” on 20 October, during which both the defence and the “prosecuting authority” presented their final arguments. The Greek Cypriots face “charges” related to “illegal entry” into the occupied territories and “violation of a military zone.”
The case carries significant political weight and is widely viewed as retaliation by the authorities in the north against efforts by the Republic of Cyprus to prosecute foreign developers exploiting Greek Cypriot-owned land.
In a separate matter, the “trial” against two of the five individuals also continued yesterday, Thursday, at the “district court” in occupied Trikomo. That separate “trial” relates to alleged violations of the “law” concerning data protection and privacy, stemming from property-related documents the group allegedly possessed at the time of their arrest.
