The e-kalathi price transparency platform has enabled the Cyprus Consumer Association to identify significant price variations across the island’s major supermarket chains, with the cheapest retailer offering savings of up to €156 on common household products.

The consumer association conducted two comprehensive studies using data from the e-kalathi system, which displays prices of essential products across Cypriot supermarkets.

The platform currently tracks 478 product codes, providing consumers with transparent price comparisons.

The first study, published on August 4, analysed data collected between 29th July and 3rd August, examining 267 common products available across five major chains: Sklavenitis, Athienitis, Ioannides, Metro and Alpha Mega.

Sklavenitis leads affordability rankings in two separate studies

Sklavenitis emerged as the most economical option with a total basket cost of €926.52, followed by Athienitis at €979.49, Ioannides at €1,025.85, Metro at €1,047.76, and Alpha Mega at €1,049.87.

A second study conducted on August 31 confirmed the price hierarchy remained stable. Comparing 260 common products, the analysis showed Sklavenitis maintaining its position as the cheapest supermarket with a total cost of €893.38, followed by Athienitis at €951.84, Metro at €985.47, Ioannides at €997.06, and Alpha Mega at €997.90.

The Cyprus Consumer Association emphasised that its conclusions are based exclusively on prices recorded on the e-kalathi platform, without any external intervention or manipulation of data.

The association stated it remains committed to systematic monitoring and analysis of the platform’s data, aiming to provide reliable consumer information and strengthen healthy competition in the food retail market.

The e-kalathi platform is a government initiative to enhance price transparency and empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions. The system enables shoppers to compare prices across retailers before visiting stores.

The price gap between the cheapest and most expensive retailers narrowed slightly between the two studies, from €123.35 in August to €104.52 by the end of the month, though the affordability rankings remained unchanged.
