The road network has been delivered to traffic within the framework of the project concerning the development of the Fishing Shelter and River in Liopetri.

Road construction work had resumed last April, with the Interior Minister inspecting the area today, noting that construction of the remaining project is also within schedules.

The Interior Minister was accompanied by Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zanettou and Liopetri Deputy Mayor Markos Koumi. In his statements, the Interior Minister reminded that the project in question began in 2020 with the completion date set for 2023.

However, Ioannou said, “There were enormous delays, and we took the drastic decision to terminate the contract, with the agreement of the Local Authorities”.

As the Minister explained, after termination of the contract, within a few months, completion of the road became possible, whilst procedures for awarding the tender for construction of the quays are at an advanced stage, with an estimated commencement date for work next October and completion within a few months.

For his part, Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zanettou initially thanked the Interior Minister for his presence at the site. Referring to the completion of the road, Zanettou stated that “the schedules set by the Minister and the promises today we really see have become reality; we have been vindicated, and indeed, after almost five years, we have the road here at Liopetri River in traffic and not only. A road, which, as the Minister promised, with the award of the offer in April, has been completed within the relevant schedules and, indeed, as we have been informed, the next works are also proceeding, which are expected to be completed within 2026”.

Zanettou also expressed thanks to the competent Services of the Interior Ministry for the support and help they have given, both for the completion of the project and for the professionals of the area.

“I wish and believe that soon, through this process, we will see the project within 2026 to be fully completed,” the Ayia Napa Mayor said characteristically.

In turn, Deputy Mayor of the municipal district of Liopetri Markos Koumi thanked the Interior Minister, but also the President of the Republic for his personal interest in solving the major problem that had arisen in the project, due to the delays.

Finally, Koumi expressed his satisfaction that, with completion of the road network, the serious access problem faced by fishermen operating in the area was solved.

“There remains the second major problem, the quays, so that fishermen can moor their boats. But, as the Minister has told us, very soon these works will also begin and we are certain they will be completed”, he noted in conclusion.
