The House Environment Committee is set to consider stricter penalties for animal cruelty and malicious killing of animals, following a legislative proposal by Democratic Rally (DISY) MP Savia Orphanidou.
In a statement, Orphanidou emphasised that a country’s culture is reflected in how its citizens treat animals.
The proposed legislation aims to amend the animal welfare and protection law to significantly increase prescribed penalties.
Orphanidou also stressed that the effectiveness of legislation depends on its implementation, calling for strengthening relevant authorities such as the Animal Police and Veterinary Services to more effectively address instances of animal abuse.
The environment committee has decided to request data on previous convictions and imposed penalties, while also registering the proper implementation of existing legislation as a matter of priority.
The proposal is expected to proceed to a full parliamentary vote, with Orphanidou underlining the importance of law enforcement and enhancing control mechanisms.
