Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos visited Damascus on Thursday for talks with Syria’s transitional leadership, following the fall of the Assad regime.
Kombos met with Syria’s transitional leader Ahmed Al-Shaara and Foreign and Expatriates Minister Assad Hassan al-Shaybani.
According to an announcement by the Press and Information Office, the discussions emphasised the right of all Syrian people, regardless of ethnic or religious identity, to aspire to a hopeful and sustainable future at this historic juncture.
“Cyprus, as Syria’s neighbour and the closest EU member state, has expressed active support for the Syrian people’s prospects of prosperity, stability and security for both the country and the wider region,” the announcement added.
The visit comes ahead of next week’s EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, where Syria’s situation and next steps will be discussed.
