The broader public sector employed 73,137 people in the third quarter of 2024, according to data released Thursday by the Statistical Service, which for the first time included figures from the newly established District Self-Administration Organisations launched in July 2024.
General government employment stood at 68,153, while government-controlled companies and enterprises employed 4,984 people. Within general government, which comprises central government, non-profit organisations and local authorities, employment reached 52,690, 9,975 and 5,488 respectively.
Year-on-year employment in the broader public sector increased by 830 people (1.1%). Central government employment rose by 695 (1.1%) and local authorities by 962 (21.3%), while government-controlled companies saw a decrease of 827 (-14.2%).
The significant increase in local authority employment and corresponding decrease in government-controlled companies reflects the establishment of District Self-Administration Organisations from July 1, 2024, which absorbed activities from Water Supply and Sewerage Boards.
Compared to the second quarter of 2024, broader public sector employment fell by 2,577 (-3.4%), primarily due to a reduction in fixed-term educational service employees.
