The primary school teachers’ union POED is expecting the Ministry of Education to provide specific timelines for resolving key issues affecting primary education, which the union claims have seen little progress.
The development follows a recent meeting between the union and Education Minister to discuss pending matters.
Both parties agreed to schedule immediate follow-up meetings to intensify dialogue and establish concrete timelines for resolution.
The issues under discussion include managing school violence and delinquency, the operation of optional all-day schools, increasing administrative time for management teams, expanding administrative positions in pre-primary education, establishing an employment framework for substitute teachers, revising the ministry’s substitution policy, and addressing school infrastructure problems and facility certifications.
Regarding permanent positions, the union has been informed that the ministry is proceeding with allocating positions for the second phase in 2025, with completion expected in 2026, in accordance with the existing agreement between POED and the ministry.
On the matter of air conditioning, the ministry has indicated that installation work, along with electrical upgrades, will proceed at selected schools, with a list of participating institutions to be shared with the union in the near future.
The ministry’s proposal for the new appointment system will be shared with POED after the Legal Service’s recommendations have been reviewed, with a fundamental principle of ensuring no teacher is disadvantaged by the changes.
