Fresh potato prices in Cyprus have rocketed to their highest levels, showing a 30.61% monthly increase in November and a 57.21% annual rise from November 2023, according to data analysed by the Cyprus Consumers’ Association.
With extra virgin olive oil prices remaining elevated at 47.5% above last year’s levels, the popular household dish of olive oil-fried potatoes has become increasingly unaffordable for many families.
While the overall inflation rate increased to 1.5% in November from October’s 0.9%, there were some positive developments in other food categories. Fresh vegetables, excluding potatoes and other bulbs, saw a significant price decrease of 23.14%. Other notable price drops included sugar at 23.21%, liquid fuels at 15.03%, and garden furniture at 11.94%.
Despite these reductions, food prices for the January-November 2024 period showed an overall increase of 2.96% compared to the same period in 2023, even though food prices decreased by 2.26% between October and November 2024.
