Parliament to vote on simplified solar panel rules for farmers

A draft law that would eliminate bureaucratic requirements for farmers installing solar panels on agricultural storage facilities for self-consumption is heading to parliament for a vote, following discussions in the Parliamentary Commerce Committee.

Committee Chairman Kyriakos Chatzigiannis (DISY) thanked fellow MPs and government officials for helping create the legislative framework that simplifies photovoltaic installations for registered farmers within their agricultural properties.

“Once passed, farmers will be able to install solar panels without any bureaucratic hurdles”, said Chatzigiannis. He added that this would also help farmers take advantage of rural development schemes.

The DISY MP criticised the Energy Ministry for not taking the initiative on such measures.

“Some in this country want to obstruct renewable energy integration into our energy mix by any means”, he said, noting that “while all these efforts should come from the Energy Minister, they are always driven by parliamentary initiatives”.

Chatzigiannis suggested that the cost savings could potentially lead to lower prices for agricultural products.

The proposed legislation effectively removes administrative barriers for installing solar panels on farm storage buildings when used for self-consumption, making the process significantly more straightforward.
