Israel says ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon violated

Israeli tanks struck six locations in southern Lebanon on Thursday, a day after a US and French-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into force, following what Israel said were breaches involving suspicious movements in the border zone.

Αccording to Reuters, the Israeli military reported that suspects, some in vehicles, had entered several areas in the southern security zone. Tank rounds hit Markaba, where two people were injured, as well as Wazzani, Kfarchouba, Khiyam, Taybe and agricultural areas near Marjayoun, all within two kilometres of the Blue Line border demarcation.

While displaced Lebanese families attempted to check on their properties, Israeli troops remained stationed within Lebanese territory. Reuters journalists reported hearing surveillance drones over southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire agreement.

Neither Hezbollah nor Israel immediately commented on the tank fire, Reuters reported. However, Hezbollah stated its fighters remain “fully equipped” to respond to Israeli actions and will monitor Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon “with their hands on the trigger”.

The Israeli military had previously warned residents of border towns not to return to their homes yet for safety reasons.
