Paphos bus workers suspend Monday strike for labour talks

Bus workers in Paphos have suspended a 24-hour strike planned for Monday, November 25, after accepting an invitation for talks from the Labour Relations Department of the Ministry of Labour.

Trade unions OMEPEGE-SEK and SEGDAMELIN-PEO announced that employees of OSIPA (Paphos Public Transport Company) will attend the meeting in a final attempt to reach an agreement on renewing their collective employment agreement.

“Our aim is to resolve workplace issues without inconveniencing passengers through strike action, for which the workers bear no responsibility”, the unions said in a joint statement.

Charalambos Avgousti, General Secretary of OMEPEGE-SEK transport workers’ federation, said the priority was dialogue rather than industrial action.

Meanwhile, SEGDAMELIN-PEO General Secretary Natia Kyritsi stated that workers would attend the meeting in good faith, expecting proposals similar to agreements reached with other transport companies.

The unions indicated they would maintain a constructive approach to finding a mutually acceptable solution that improves working conditions while ensuring normal bus services.
