Rise in seasonal infections fills children’s wards at hospitals

Relevant News

Public hospitals are seeing a surge in paediatric admissions due to respiratory infections, skin infections including staphylococcus, and viral gastroenteritis cases, with Makarios Hospital reporting increased patient numbers.

Adult admissions to general medical wards have also begun to rise, though at a lower rate.

Charalambos Charilou, spokesperson for the State Health Services Organisation, told philenews that the seasonal infection period has already begun for children.

Parents should start taking precautions as the circulating viruses can be transmitted to and affect adults as well, Charilou said.

Charilaou continued, saying that cases presenting at Makarios Hospital include bronchiolitis caused by the RSV virus, other respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal infections.

Doctors are also reporting cases of staphylococcus infections in children.

While adult wards are primarily treating respiratory infections, Charilou noted that flu cases remain limited.

He reminded that Cyprus typically sees an increase in influenza cases in late December, a pattern expected to continue this year.
