A fire near Limassol’s Kouris dam has been contained except for one area where difficult terrain continues to hamper firefighting efforts, officials said on Tuesday.
Strong winds are complicating firefighting operations in the area, with the blaze moving southward through dry grass, wild vegetation and trees in rough terrain and along a riverbed.
Five vehicles from Limassol’s Fire Service are responding to the incident, supported by Department of Forests vehicles, with excavators deployed to assist in the hard-to-reach area.
The Limassol District Officer and Chief Fire Officer are coordinating response efforts at the scene, joined by Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis.
Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis announced on X that following an increase in rural fires in recent days, the Fire Chief, in coordination with the Police Chief, has ordered increased patrols by both security forces. The Fire Service’s drone unit has also intensified surveillance of high-risk areas.
The Fire Service has urged the public to immediately report any fires or suspicious activities to police and fire authorities.
