The President of the Secondary Education Directors Association (SEDMEK), Elena Hadjiyerou, confirmed that several schools are lacking headmasters and assistant headmasters.
This situation has raised concerns among educators and the Ministry of Education.
Hadjiyerou emphasises the need for immediate action to address these staffing gaps, stating that there is no excuse for inadequate planning. She calls for swift procedures to fill vacant positions, even during the summer months.
Additionally, the president of the headmasters emphasised that measures have been decided upon in a meeting at the Ministry of Education with all relevant services and stakeholders, including SEDMEK, for the days leading up to the start of classes and for the first day of students’ return on Friday.
The Cyprus Secondary Education Teachers Association (OELMEK) has also expressed concerns about the shortage of managerial staff, urging the Ministry of Education to ensure that these positions are filled promptly and that managerial staff are not seconded to other duties.
As of yesterday, three secondary schools were without headmasters, raising further concerns about the preparedness of schools to start the academic year.
