A BBC description of the female Cypriot flagbearer at yesterday’s opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics has made the rounds of social media, posing questions and eliciting responses of displeasure.
The BBC commentator referred to Elena Kulichenko, an accomplished high jumper, who recently set a new record and has good chances of progressing to the final, ‘the daughter of a Russian businessman living in Cyprus’, without further remarks as to the young woman representing Cyprus or the sport she’s competing in.
What the commentator was alluding to by referring to her father’s job, remains unknown, but social media users have reached their own conclusions.
