Nicosia and Limassol will soon have at least 125 ‘smart’ traffic lights as part of the island’s new Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades told Philenews.
He also explained that the coordination will be possible from a control centre along with self-regulation of the ‘smart’ lights – depending on traffic on the roads.
The so-called ‘smart’ traffic lights are to cost about €6 million and will be installed in a total of 125 locations – 70 in Nicosia and 55 in Limassol.
The new smart lights are expected to drastically reduce jamming.
Vafeades also said: “We are moving away from the existing system, under which there was a specific and fixed time for green and red.
“Now, with the smart lights, the timing will be reprogrammed based on the conditions on the road network”.
For example, he added, if at an intersection there are cars waiting on the side of the road where the red light is on, but the road is empty on the green light, then, the smart lights will make the appropriate change to regulate traffic accordingly.
