Democratic Senator Mark Warner won re-election in Virginia on Tuesday, defeating Republican Bert Mizusawa, the Guardian reported, as polls closed in six more states, including Florida and Georgia, where Senate races are being closely watched.
In Florida’s 20th congressional district, Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz won a 12th term in the House of Representatives, beating Republican Brent Andersen, according to the Guardian. Her district had been redrawn this year to favour Republicans as part of a redistricting drive in the state, the newspaper said.
Polls closed at 7pm ET (0000 GMT) in Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia, and in most of Florida and New Hampshire, the Guardian reported. Any polling stations still open in Indiana and Kentucky also closed.
Senate races
In Florida, progressive Democrat Angie Nixon is trying to unseat Republican Senator Ashley Moody in one of two special Senate elections this year, the Guardian said.
In Georgia, Democrat Jon Ossoff, who is seeking a second term, faces a challenge from Republican Congressman Mike Collins, who is backed by Trump, according to the newspaper.
In South Carolina, Darline Graham is seeking a full term after the state’s governor appointed her to serve out the term of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, who died in July. Her Democratic opponent is Annie Andrews, a paediatrician, the Guardian reported.
In New Hampshire, Republicans see a chance to win an open Senate seat, with former Republican Senator John Sununu running against Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas. The Guardian said the race had become increasingly worrying for Democrats in the final weeks of the campaign.
