The issue of uncontrolled fireworks displays took centre stage today in the House Environment Committee, with concerns raised about widespread illegal fireworks usage at events, particularly weddings and baptisms.
Participants agreed that the situation is spiralling out of control and that there is a lack of enforcement of the legislation.
Animal welfare organisations who were invited to the House session also raised their concerns over the issue.
According to police data, in 2022, citizens across Cyprus lodged 218 reports with the authorities, leading to 18 cases being brought to court. In the current year, up until August, there have been 108 reported incidents to the police, with five cases among them making their way to the courtroom.
During the session, the Mines Service contested a proposal put forth by Akel for a complete ban on fireworks.
Akel MP Nikos Kettiros has been tasked with drafting a bill to regulate the use of fireworks, acknowledging the challenging nature of regulating the situation.
