President Christodoulides said that ‘recent phenomena that came to light’ will not be tolerated after a meeting with Health Minister Popi Kanari and the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Christina Yiannaki, in a bid to end a public row between the two women.

In the meeting, the President underscored the need for collaboration to address both the implementation of the government’s agenda and the healthcare sector’s challenges.

The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace on Thursday morning, during which the President made it clear that cooperation was required to accomplish the government’s initiatives and navigate the challenges in the realm of healthcare.

Simultaneously, the participants discussed specific targets established after meetings with the State Health Services Organisation (Okypy) and the Health Insurance Organisation, including the Ministry’s reorganisation, enhancement of internal oversight, and expedited preparation of essential legislative drafts to further improve Gesy’s provided services.

Implementation timelines were set, and a follow-up meeting was scheduled before the President’s departure for New York to assess the progress achieved.

Kanari and Yiannaki have been engaged in a very public war of words when the Minister called on Yiannaki to provide proof of her dentistry degree from Cairo University.

As well as proof that she could speak English – a prerequisite when in such a high position in the public service.

The allegations resurfaced on X – formerly Twitter – by the parody account Jho Low ο Προεδρικος Βαφτιστικος.

Yiannaki has so far refused.

Sources close to the Presidency said Christodoulides considers the leaked content of the correspondence between Kanari and Yiannaki as unacceptable.
