China’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Liu Yantao, reaffirmed China’s position in favour of “one China and one Cyprus” during a recent briefing with Cypriot journalists.
Cyprus issue
The ambassador highlighted the mutual support between China and Cyprus on important matters, including the reopening of the closed area of Varosha and the renewal of the UN peacekeeping force mandate in Cyprus (UNFICYP). He emphasised that China consistently backs Cyprus’s stance, particularly during discussions at the UN concerning the Cyprus issue.
When asked about potential Chinese support if Cyprus seeks UN Security Council sanctions against Turkey for the reopening of Varosha, Ambassador Yantao pointed out that relevant Security Council resolutions on Varosha already exist and are still in effect. He stated that China supports Cyprus’s efforts for a bicommunal bizonal federal solution based on these resolutions. The ambassador encouraged all parties involved to engage in increased communication and contact to pursue a just, lasting, and comprehensive resolution to the Cyprus problem.
Regarding sanctions, Ambassador Yantao acknowledged the complexity of the issue and raised the question of which countries would implement the sanctions if Cyprus requested them. He highlighted the challenge of enforcement, especially considering that Turkey is a member of NATO. He stressed the importance of determining which countries would support and exert pressure on Turkey in such a scenario.
Bilateral relations
Addressing the impact of the international environment and China’s relations with the EU on China-Cyprus relations, the ambassador acknowledged that Cyprus, as an EU member state, is influenced by the EU framework. However, he underscored the resilience of bilateral relations between China and Cyprus. Ambassador Yantao expressed belief in the positive momentum in China-EU relations, which provides a favourable backdrop for further deepening China-Cyprus ties based on their longstanding 50-year friendship. He emphasised the commitment of China and Cyprus to the UN Charter, international justice, and shared values and principles.
Trade
Regarding trade and economic matters, the ambassador highlighted the growth in trade volume between China and Cyprus, reaching $1.22 billion in 2022.
He mentioned Cyprus’s participation in the Shanghai International Trade Fair and the popularity of Cypriot products in China, such as halloumi, zivania, and fruit juices.
Discussions are ongoing to expand Cypriot exports to China, including products like honey and seafood. The ambassador also mentioned that China’s leading e-commerce website, jd.com, has a dedicated section featuring Cypriot products.
Culture
In terms of culture, Ambassador Yantao revealed that China will be the honoured country at this year’s book fair in Nicosia, with a Chinese delegation participating in the event. Additionally, the Chinese Embassy plans to organize a week of Chinese culture in Cyprus, showcasing the rich cultural exchange between the two countries.
