The Law Office is preparing to decide whether former Cyprus Football Association president Giorgos Koumas will be prosecuted criminally over conflict of interest allegations involving his simultaneous roles running Cypriot football and managing television rights for international matches, an informed source told Phileleftheros yesterday.
The decisive meeting will examine findings by independent criminal investigator Alexandra Lykourgou and 20 box files of evidence compiled during the investigation, according to the source, who is in a position to know the proceedings and progress of the case.
Three people are being investigated, according to our reports. Besides Koumas, a Cyprus Football Association official and a businessman have been called to give statements as suspects.
The case centres on Koumas’s simultaneous tenure in senior positions at the Cyprus Football Association whilst operating as a manager of football television rights. Our investigation since 2014 has proved his connection with television rights management companies for football matches.
Companies reportedly linked to his interests, as we revealed with documents in 2018, were registered in the Seychelles and the British Virgin Islands. As a businessman, he sold television products to CytaVision, to which rights to Cyprus national team international matches and APOEL were granted through companies linked to his interests.
A report by investigating officials appointed by the Ethics and Sports Protection Committee—Ilias Stefanou and Efthymios Th. Efthymiou—identified conflict of interest in at least three cases. Testimonies spoke of actions that may have resulted in manipulation of the football championship.
Koumas told us in 2018 that his dual capacity was examined by a competent authority and nothing reprehensible was found.
