Criminal investigator Alexandra Lykougou has received authorisation from the Law Office to summon multiple individuals for questioning as suspects in the ongoing investigation into the alleged conflict of interest case involving former Cyprus Football Association (CFA) president George Koumas.
The development follows a meeting between Lykougou and Law Office leadership, where approval was granted to expand the criminal investigation beyond Koumas to include additional persons connected to the case that emerged in September 2018.
Investigation scope expands
Sources indicate the investigation now encompasses potential felony charges rather than simple criminal offences, based on evidence compiled by the Sports Ethics and Protection Committee investigators Elias Stefanou and Efthymios Efthymiou, followed by subsequent police and Lykougou investigative work.
The Attorney General will make final determinations regarding prosecutions.
On 12 May 2025, Lykougou delivered extensive evidence contained in approximately 20 archive boxes to authorities, accompanied by a comprehensive report requesting guidance on two specific matters addressed in yesterday’s meeting.
The investigation has examined testimony regarding:
- Four companies belonging to Koumas in the Seychelles and British Virgin Islands, allegedly used to sell foreign sports broadcasting rights to CytaVision whilst maintaining his senior CFA position
- Testimonies from three football officials alleging improper distribution of CFA TV funds (CytaVision contract) to clubs in ways potentially manipulating championship outcomes
- Evidence that CFA contractually retained rights to appoint match commentators for CytaVision broadcasts
- Claims that ABC BC Broadcasting Corporation Ltd, which secured the CFA production contract for televised matches, represents Koumas’s business interests
