Aglantzia heads for by-election after deputy mayor wins House seat

Aglantzia is heading for a by-election after deputy mayor Andreas Constantinou won a seat in the House of Representatives with DISY in the Nicosia district, leaving a vacancy in the local authority of the newly established Nicosia municipality.

Under local government legislation, the deputy mayor’s position cannot remain vacant. Once Constantinou’s election is finalised and he takes up his duties in parliament, the procedures set out by law will be triggered.

The Interior Ministry is expected to formally announce the election, which must be held within 45 days of the seat becoming vacant.

Aglantzia, one of the largest and most central districts of the Nicosia municipality, will be called to elect Constantinou’s successor. He had led the area first as mayor from 2020 and then as deputy mayor following the 2024 local government reform.

Although the election comes immediately after the parliamentary vote, political parties have little time to ease off.

The law provides that the by-election will be held by universal suffrage among registered voters in the specific municipal district. The new deputy mayor will serve for the remainder of the municipal council’s term.

An official announcement is expected in the coming days from the Returning Officer on the date for submitting candidacies, as well as the Sunday on which Aglantzia residents will go to the polls.

The contest, although local in scope, is expected to draw political attention as one of the first tests of public sentiment after the parliamentary election result.
