Works began today to improve safety on the road between Aglantzia and Geri after complaints from drivers about confusing lane markings on the three-lane route.

Philenews visited the site this morning and witnessed the changes being made to the road surface, confirming the confusion caused by the three lanes.

Nicosia Provincial Engineer Christos Kounaidis from the Public Works Department said the road does not fall under his department’s jurisdiction, but they are making corrections to better serve citizens and improve safety after pressure from the municipalities of Geri and Aglantzia.

The road from Aglantzia to Geri (from the small St George’s church) has been widened on both sides, whilst an additional lane was created from Geri to Aglantzia due to increased traffic congestion, according to Kounaidis.

The Public Works Department official explained that when road markings are painted over, some old lines remain visible on the asphalt due to their reflective properties, creating confusion.

Following complaints from residents, all lines will now be repainted with thermoplastic paint, and arrows will be added to show vehicle directions, according to the department.

The road has one lane running from Aglantzia to Geri and two lanes from Geri to Aglantzia. Signs indicating the road has three lanes have been added, along with arrows showing the correct directions to prevent confusion.

Kounaidis said he hopes these measures will improve signage for people using the road.

At a later stage, the Public Works Department said pavements and a cycle lane will be created and lighting installed.

The design is being completed within days, and the project will be tendered for construction in the second half of 2026, according to the department.

Aglantzia Deputy Mayor intervened with the Transport Minister following justified complaints from residents who use the road, leading to immediate referral to the Nicosia provincial engineer to take measures to address the safety issues.
