Only 20 months remain until the implementation of the Local Government reform, with municipalities and communities rushing to achieve the deadlines set for June 2024.
A lot of work is also taking place at the Interior Ministry that is supervising the implementation of the road map and recording problems through regional meetings.
In the near future, an interstate agreement will be signed with Greece that will assist during the transitional period on issues of establishing plans, staff, and budgets by providing experts with experience in the implementation of similar plans.
Giannis Karagiannis, Director-General of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece, will be appointed coordinator on issues regarding the reform, Interior Minister Nicos Nouris announced.
Next month, the training program for the Local Government staff will take place and will last for 30 months. Also, the working groups of the Central Advisory Committee have started work on the various sections like personnel issues and IT systems, while the groups on issues of education and budget will convene soon.
The only problem remaining pending, according to the Interior Minister, is the dispute that emerged in the area of free Famagusta regarding the position of the head of coordinating bodies as well as the establishment of headquarters during the transitional period. Minister Nicos Nouris explained that the Ministry had to intervene, setting Paralimni as headquarters since it is the biggest municipality in the area and its mayor as president of the temporary body.
