Yellow warning for severe thunderstorms in Cyprus until 6pm

The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for isolated severe thunderstorms, in force from 1pm to 6pm on Tuesday.

The storms are expected to hit mainly the mountains, inland areas and the northwest of the island. Hail may fall, and winds will be changeable and strengthen. Rainfall is expected to reach about 35 millimetres an hour in places.

An unstable air mass will affect the area until Wednesday.

On Tuesday, there will be locally increased cloud at first, which is expected to bring isolated showers or thunderstorms to the west and north coasts. Later, it will turn mainly cloudy, with local rain and isolated thunderstorms. Winds will be mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, temporarily reaching 4 to 5 Beaufort on the south coast in the afternoon. The sea will be up to slightly rough. Temperatures will rise to around 28C inland and on the coasts and 17C in the higher mountains.

On Tuesday night, there will be locally increased low cloud at times. Winds will be mainly northwesterly to northeasterly and light, 3 Beaufort, and the sea will be calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will fall to 15C inland, around 17C on the coasts and 8C in the higher mountains.

On Wednesday, it will be mainly fine at first, but cloud will build later, bringing isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and inland.

On Thursday and Friday, it will be mainly fine, with locally increased cloud at times. Temperatures will settle slightly below the seasonal average.
