Talks between Larnaca Municipality and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens have yielded positive results, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Exclusive information obtained by philenews reveals that following meetings held last Friday in Larnaca, University of Athens officials indicated their intention to establish three academic schools in the city, in addition to their planned presence in Nicosia.
While officials have not yet specified which academic departments will be created in Larnaca, the decision has been met with considerable satisfaction as the university intends to proceed rapidly, potentially establishing its presence within the next two years.
During the visit, the Larnaca delegation showed the Athens University representatives two specific venues that could immediately accommodate the needs of the three schools.
A reliable source told philenews that university officials were fully satisfied with the facilities and confirmed their desire to develop academic departments in both Nicosia and Larnaca.
Both MPs and members of the Municipal Council were informed of the university’s intentions during a dinner hosted for the University of Athens delegation.
It should be noted that plans have already been finalised for five other schools from the historic academic institution to be established in Nicosia, specifically at Tarsi Arcade, following initiatives by Archbishop George.
Two buildings belonging to the Archbishopric, Nicosia Municipality and a Greek foundation will be used for the facilities. According to the Archbishop, a €14 million loan will be secured to properly develop the site.
Meanwhile, Larnaca continues discussions with the National Technical University of Athens, whilst awaiting official announcements regarding the establishment of the School of Marine Technology, Sciences and Sustainable Development by the Cyprus University of Technology at Mackenzie.
Recently, the Cyprus Theatre Organisation also announced plans to create a Drama School in Larnaca, in collaboration with a state university.
